TradeUp
Team Project
Overview
TradeUp is a mobile application that helps users learn how to trade cryptocurrency before risking real money by buying and selling using mock money in real-time market data.
The app has all the essential features simplified into a user-friendly guided experience, including the most common types of trades, price alerts, charts, and order books – making trading easy to navigate and analyze for a beginner.

Role
UI/UX Designer
Tasks
User research, user flows, wireframes, UI design, market research, proposal design, proposal writing, and presentation.
Problem
Gen Z spends an average of $6,120 annually on crypto, while millennials spend $8,596. Ironically, Gen X remains the highest spending population – $9,611, while Boomers spend $4,567, despite making up only 7% of total traders.
New traders are overwhelmed: Overloaded with the complexity of learning and new information influencing trading.
Investment fear due to lack of funds: Reluctance in risking money for crypto trading due to limited finances.
Lack of learning through experience: Lack of exposure to trading due to difficulty in learning and risk aversion.
Solution

We created TradeUp to fill this lack of experience. We know that practice ultimately leads to improvement.
We gathered the fundamental features of trading, simplified them into an intuitive interface, and set in real-time market data. We want our users to learn from real-life market scenarios, further support them with educational resources, and capitalize on mastery learning by keeping users engaged by rewarding their performance.
Main Features

Design Process
I started TradeUp from user research and competitor analysis, addressing the user experience. After that, designers created low and high-fidelity designs, and Angeline and I conducted the user test to ensure the usability of TradeUp.

Market Research
Market research
According to the Ontario Securities Commission, more than half of millennials don’t invest due to a lack of knowledge of how to start.
Many millennials are worried about losing money and don’t trust financial institutions.
Another study by Fortune Media showed that one in four millennials who save are investing with an entirely different belief than their parents – focusing on socially responsible investing. Decentralized Finance (DeFi) aims for a system operating without intermediaries. With the emergence of decentralized exchanges (DEX), millennials and Gen Z’s interest in investing in cryptocurrencies is rising. Despite the remarkable impact of millennials and Gen Z on the investment area, there are not enough resources available to practice.
Competitive Analysis
Several apps in the market help users learn how to trade. However, only two others include a chart, one with price alerts, and none incorporate buying and selling in live market data.

TrdaeUp’s Unique Advantage
TradeUp’s Trade and Track features stand out from its competitors. Users can finally learn theories and put their knowledge to the test through simulation by trading in real-time market data and learning from the results. TradeUp’s simplified interface and hand-picked features prepare its users with the foundational skills and are designed according to most trading exchange apps. They can also track their performance and become effective traders by performing consistently.
User Persona

User Flow
We created the primary user flow to define the interaction design and the app’s information architecture. The user flow helped in discussions with developers to clarify the main goal and features of TradeUp.

Information Architecture
Information Architecture clarifies the infrastructure, features, and hierarchy. We outlined the structure of TradeUp for the team to understand how the app works – helping in efficient communication and collaboration.

Wireframes

Home
The homepage gives the user a glimpse of various features of the app. These include featured resources, trending coins, and the top traders in the leaderboard.

Market List And Crypto Detail
A list of cryptocurrencies to trade is shown on the Market page. By selecting a coin, the user is directed to the Crypto Detail page, which offers its performance using a chart and order book.

Order Status And Coin Info
Aside from the Chart, the Crypto Detail page contains other pages, including Orders and Coin Info. Orders contain the status of orders, while the Coin Info contains basic information about the coin.

UI Kits

Usability Test
To create a human-centric design, Angeline and I did the five user tests via Zoom meeting to analyze TradeUp’s target audience’s behavior when interacting with TradeUp. We proceeded to record the results and discuss our recommendations.
Overview, users like the minimalistic interface compared to most trading exchange apps. They liked the Resources page, which provides trading materials to support learning, and the performance to help them understand their learning behavior. Furthermore, we found that either TradeUp provided an intuitive user flow, but the users still are stuck in some tasks. Therefore, we added an onboarding experience to help users quickly understand the journey in TradeUp.

Takeaways
This project provided me with an opportunity to understand how to work together with several developers, designers, and a product manager. Moreover, it allowed me to collaborate with people from different cultures and backgrounds, sharing our experiences and learning how to effectively adapt to different ways of working.
